A feeling can be easy to dismiss when you cannot explain it yet. So can a question that keeps returning: Why am I still giving this my energy?

October invites you to notice those moments. Each passage focuses on one gate and how its theme may show up in your life.

─── ✦ ───

October 1–7 — Gate 48: Depth

When preparation becomes a place to hide

Why this matters:

You may be holding back work you care about because you can still see everything it could become. One more revision feels sensible. So does one more qualification. Meanwhile, no one gets to benefit from what you already know.

How it may show up in your life:

Notice the difference between improving something and postponing the moment it can be seen.

If Gate 48 is present in your chart:

Depth may be familiar to you. You can see beneath the surface and may find it hard to offer something while you’re still aware of its imperfections. What is ready to be useful now?

If Gate 48 is absent but your Spleen Center is defined:

You may usually trust your own way of sensing what needs attention. This week could draw you into a deeper look at one problem. Give it your attention without assuming every question requires more preparation.

If you carry Gate 16:

The transit may bring fresh depth to a skill or practice you already have. Notice where practice is helping you express what you know—and where you may be rehearsing to avoid sharing it.

If your Spleen Center is undefined:

The pressure to be prepared may feel especially strong around certain people or situations. Notice whose standard of “ready” you’re responding to.

Points to ponder:

What would you share if being helpful mattered more than being impossible to criticize?

October 7–13 — Gate 57: Intuitive Clarity

When you talk yourself out of a quiet nudge

Why this matters:

Gate 57 is that immediate, quiet sense that something needs your attention before you can explain why. It rarely arrives with a plan. You can talk yourself out of it and still be fine. But you may spend time and energy working around the very thing that first nudge could have helped you prepare for.

In real life:

A long-overdue vacation, an instinctive hit to take my computer to the beach with me. Rationalizing myself out of it. LOL. That was the first nudge, the one I didn’t follow.

The second nudge was to check my email – something I had decided ahead of time I wouldn’t do. This time I listened to that quiet nudge. And I am so happy I did. Because sure enough, I saw one I had been waiting for: an invitation to complete a video interview for something I really wanted to do.

And here I was, at the beach. No computer. No professional work clothes, special lighting, or desk. Had I not talked myself out of my original “gut” instinct, I would not have had to hold my phone throughout the interview.

That’s what those nudges feel like – a quiet “knowing” that says “do this” or “don’t do that.” Now, this didn’t turn into a disaster without a computer. It wasn’t dire. I just made it harder than it had to be. There’s always a cost of not listening to what we know, even when we can’t explain how or why we know it.

How it may show up in your life:

You think of taking something with you, checking on something, or asking one more question. Then you dismiss the thought because you cannot explain why it matters. Notice when that happens.

If Gate 57 is present in your chart:

Subtle signals may already be familiar. Notice what you sensed first, before you started gathering reasons to agree or disagree with yourself.

If Gate 57 is absent but your Spleen Center is defined:

You have your own consistent way of perceiving what is healthy or timely for you. A sharp impression this week may add information. You can consider it without forcing an instant conclusion.

If you carry a gate that connects with 57:

The transit may make a familiar instinct easier to act on or express. Pay attention to the moment you know enough to take a small step, even if you cannot describe the entire path.

If your Spleen Center is undefined:

Someone else’s urgency or alarm may become loud in your body. Give yourself room to ask whether the signal belongs to your situation before acting on it.

Points to ponder:

What was my first nudge? Did I listen to it—or talk myself out of it?

October 13–18 — Gate 32: Continuity

When you wonder whether something still has a future

Why this matters:

You may be reluctant to leave a commitment because of everything you have invested in it. You may be equally reluctant to admit how much it now asks of you. The question is what is growing in the present.

How it may show up in your life:

You find yourself assessing a relationship, project, or arrangement you once felt sure about. You want to know whether it can last, but you also need to see whether it is working now.

If Gate 32 is present in your chart:

You may be especially alert to what has lasting potential. Notice whether you are seeing evidence of growth or carrying something because you fear losing what it might have become.

If Gate 32 is absent but your Spleen Center is defined:

Questions about long-term viability may come to the foreground. Use what you observe over time rather than demanding a guarantee about the future.

If you carry Gate 54:

This transit may bring your ambition into sharper contact with the question of what can endure. Is the effort you are making building something you still want?

If your Spleen Center is undefined:

Another person’s fear of failure may feel persuasive. Take time to distinguish their concern from what you can actually see in the commitment.

Points to ponder:

What would need to change for me to continue wholeheartedly?

October 18–24 — Gate 50: Values

When caring asks you to make a decision

Why this matters:

It is easy to speak about your values in the abstract. It is harder when someone needs help and you have to decide what you can take on. Your answer will reveal what you value in practice.

How it may show up in your life:

You may feel responsible for keeping things fair, safe, or working for everyone. Notice whether you have agreed to a role because it is yours, or because no one else has stepped forward.

If Gate 50 is present in your chart:

Protecting what matters may feel deeply familiar. This week can show you where your sense of responsibility is well placed and where it has grown beyond what you can reasonably carry.

If Gate 50 is absent but your Spleen Center is defined:

A question of standards or responsibility may ask for your attention. You can make a sound choice without becoming the permanent keeper of everyone else’s needs.

If you carry Gate 27:

The transit may bring the question of care into sharper focus. What are you nourishing, and what does it cost you to keep doing so in this way?

If your Spleen Center is undefined:

You may absorb the feeling that someone must take charge. Pause before deciding that someone must be you.

Points to ponder:

What am I protecting by saying yes? What would I protect by saying no?

October 24–30 — Gate 28: Struggle

When you’re tired of a fight you used to choose

Why this matters:

Effort can make a life feel meaningful. It can also become so familiar that you stop asking what the effort is for. Weariness may be telling you to look closely at the struggle itself.

How it may show up in your life:

You keep defending a project, repairing a relationship, or pushing through an obstacle. You may still care deeply. You may also need to know whether this is the way you want to spend your strength.

If Gate 28 is present in your chart:

Questions of risk and meaning may be part of how you engage with life. Notice which challenges bring you alive and which ones persist mainly because you refuse to give up.

If Gate 28 is absent but your Spleen Center is defined:

A particular struggle may claim your attention this week. You can assess its value without turning it into a test of your courage.

If you carry Gate 38:

The transit may bring focus to a fight you are already in. Ask what you are fighting for. The answer matters more than how long you have fought.

If your Spleen Center is undefined:

You may feel someone else’s urgency to keep battling. Let yourself consider whether the fight is yours to take up.

Points to ponder:

If no one praised me for continuing, would I still choose this?

October 30 onward — Gate 44: Alertness

When you recognize an old pattern

Why this matters:

A familiar feeling can return before you know what triggered it. You may recognize the promise, the doubt, or the role you usually take. That recognition gives you a chance to look at what is happening now.

How it may show up in your life:

You meet someone who feels familiar, revisit an old opportunity, or find yourself preparing the same explanation you have given before.

If Gate 44 is present in your chart:

You may readily notice patterns in people and situations. Ask what your experience is showing you while leaving room for this person or situation to show you who they are now.

If Gate 44 is absent but your Spleen Center is defined:

An old pattern may stand out more clearly than usual. Observe the details before deciding whether this is truly a repeat.

If you carry Gate 26:

The transit may sharpen your awareness of how an offer, promise, or story is being presented. Pay attention to what is said and what is consistently done.

If your Spleen Center is undefined:

Familiarity may feel comforting or unsettling depending on who you are with. Give yourself time to see the present situation beyond that first feeling.

Points to ponder:

What do I know from experience, and what am I assuming?
